Friday Forecast for November 16-20
Another great week….here is some of what we learned!
Important items to address!
In reading this week, students read multiple texts based on a common topic and compared the various text structures presented. Next week, students will learn to find the main idea of an article and supporting evidence.
In math this week, students learned to plot and interpret points on a coordinate grid. There will be a unit test on geometry and coordinate grids on Monday, November 16th. Our next unit, which will begin on Tuesday, is multiplying decimals.
In social studies, students learned about important historical figures during the American Revolution and famous battles of the Revolution. There will be a unit test on the American Revolution on Monday, November 16th. Students have study guides to help assist them.
We will begin our next science unit on Tuesday, November 17th. The unit will focus on Human Body Systems and will be taught by Mrs. Hahn.

Another great week….here is some of what we learned!
Important items to address!
In reading, students will continue to read a variety of informational texts to identify the different text structures that are presented. Students will continue with annotating and summarizing a text. They will also begin comparing texts on a similar topic with different structures. In writing, students will begin writing an opinion piece on Patriots and Loyalists.
In math, we will finish up our study of 2-D figures and begin a unit on coordinate grids. Students will practice plotting and interpreting points on a grid. Battleship is a wonderful game to play at home to practice these skills. ☺
During social studies, students learned about the events leading up to the American Revolution this week. They learned about different taxes that were imposed on the colonists and created a poster called, “Road to the Revolution”. Next week, students will learn about the Declaration of Independence and about important battles of the Revolution. There will be a unit assessment on Friday, November 13th, so please continue to study notes nightly.

During reading this week, students continued to work on making inferences based on character interactions. Next week, students will learn how to write a summary of a text. In writing, students are publishing final copies of their personal narratives.
Please make sure your child is reading at home each night!
During math, students continued to work on adding and subtracting decimals using a variety of methods. Next week, students will have a quiz on adding and subtracting decimals on Thursday, October 22nd and a Quarterly test on Friday, October 23rd. The quarterly test will cover all math concepts that have been studied this quarter (multiplying and dividing whole numbers, place value, and decimals)
In science, we are wrapping up our unit on Ecosystems. Students will have a unit test on Thursday, October 22nd. Please make sure your child is studying their ecosystems vocabulary words nightly. This will assist them greatly on their unit test.

What are we learning???
In reading this week, students practiced reading a variety of fiction texts to answer specific
questions. The week ended with a unit assessment covering all standards learned thus far. Next
week, students will learn how to compare and contrast two characters, settings, and events in a
text. We will focus on a reading unit titled “The American Slurp”. Students will make a mosaic of
cultures to describe different traditions that are unique to their families. Then, there will be a
final personal narrative writing piece that students will complete. We will begin a new
Flocabulary unit on Monday as well. Students should be studying vocabulary definitions nightly.
In math this week, students learned about the power of 10 and how it impacts place value.
Next week, we will learn how to round decimals using number lines and bench marks. After
that, students will learn how to add and subtract decimals in various ways. The videos below
will show you some examples of what your child will be learning in class. Please continue to
review two-digit multiplication and division at home! We are continuing to review this concept in
our Team Time classes.

What are we learning???
In reading, we learned how an author reveals character traits to us by identifying the way they respond to events or challenges within a text. Next week, we will learn how to read fiction selections and annotate. In writing, we are continuing to learn about memoirs and will focus on using transition words throughout our writing.
This week, in math, we began our unit on decimals. Students learned about decimal place value, comparing decimals, and expanded notation. During TEAM time, we began our enrichment/remediation unit on division. Next week, students will continue their work with decimals and learn about exponents and the powers of 10.

What are we learning???
In reading, we continued to focus on making inferences from a text by citing descriptions of a character’s thoughts and feelings. Next week, students will focus on identifying major events within a text and learning about the evolution of a character. We also continued our class read aloud, Flush. Beginning of the year reading assessments are still being given.
In writing, we edited our personal narratives and published final copies! Next week, we will begin our memoir unit in writing.
In math, students continued to practice dividing two digit divisors using the rectangle sections method and the base ten method. We also practiced solving word problems with multiplication and division. On Monday, students will have a Unit Test covering multiplication and division and then, on Tuesday, we will start our unit on decimals.
We started our math TEAM time this week. Students began a unit of enrichment or remediation on multiplication. Ask your child about it!
We wrapped up our Social Studies unit on the economy this week. Next week we will begin our first unit in Science, Ecoystems.

What are we learning???
In reading, students focused on using schema, and clues from a text, to make inferences about a character. They also began checking out books from the school library! Next week, students will learn to quote specifically from a text as evidence to prove their inferences.
In writing, students learned how to write interesting leads to personal narratives and began drafting stories. Next week, we will continue to learn about narrative writing characteristics, such as pace, word choice, and transition words.
This week, in math, students continued to practice multiplication with two digit numbers. Students practiced this concept with word problems and had a quiz to check for understanding. We also began our unit on division. Next week, students will continue to practice division with one and two digit divisors using various methods. Towards the end of the week, students will practice multiplication and division concepts in word problems. Students will have a multiplication and division unit test on Monday, September 14th. Please continue to practice at home!

In reading, we focused on identifying story elements and using our classroom library. We also started our class read aloud, Flush by Carl Hiaasen. Next week, students will learn to make inferences about characters based on information from different texts. In writing, we generated ideas for narrative stories and worked on a story frame. Next week, we will work on great beginnings and adding sensory details to our stories.
In math, students reviewed place value concepts and multiplication of whole numbers. Next week, students will learn how to divide with one and two digit divisors using the rectangle sections method and the base ten method.
In Social Studies, students began learning about economics. They learned the basics about spending, saving, and earning. Next week, students will learn about interdependence. Our economics unit will last for 3 weeks followed by 6 weeks of Science.
